Guest Diva Challenge # 326

It's all about fitting in? I guess fitting in was never really my thing. Didn't really do what everyone else was doing -  just did my own thing. Considering I was making fine lace in my twenties and now am doing zentangle in my thirties (I had no lace and have no zentangle buddies who are in my age group 😑)...

Here's my 'nzeppel monotangle 😀can you tell that I heart rainbows? 😂 Done with a black sakura micron and my new collection of Staedler Triplus Fineliners and the trusty colour pencils. I've been very into working with colour recently I've realised, even my last black and white piece was infiltrated by coloured gems.

I know I know... the purist in me is also screaming that Staedler Fineliners are water based and hence not archival with a tendency to fade... 😩I blame magpie tendencies! They were so colourful! I couldn't help myself! 😵

Talking about rainbows and fitting in, the fraternal unit invited me to go with her for a free guided tour of an exhibit at the local art gallery featuring artist Yayoi Kusama: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow. Interestingly enough, Yayoi Kusama suffered from psychological disorders and credits art for her having remained alive to date. Her pieces tend to feature repetitive patterns (sound familiar?) particularly dots and nets (although her explanation on dots and nets was that her hallucinations featured dots and nets and she was inspired by them). She finds comfort in flower and pumpkins so they are also a recurring theme in her work.

She has various paintings, installations and photographs on exhibition. Here's a couple snapshots I took at the exhibition last night. Enjoy!

  1. Based on your tile, you have figured out a way to combine your 20's and 30's interests in one composition. There is a definite lacy quality to your respond to this week's challenge. Very nice. Now that I think about it, 'Nzeppel does have a lacy quality---lots of potential for positive negative space (as it were). Nice colors (colours) too. I also tend to impulse buy art supplies of lesser quality, but lower prices. Later, I am reminded that you usually get what you pay for (but not always). Looks like a nice art exhibit you went to.

Yes i fall prey to seemingly pretty and inexpenaive craft supplies! How did you know?!? The fineliners were actually on sale (buy 2 and get the 3rd free) and i couldnt resist :(

  2. My way of fitting in was to be open about my interests that coincided with my age group and keep my less socially acceptable interests in the closet. My less socially acceptable ones included reading poetry and doing crochet when all my friends were into pop music or sport. (I liked the music but not the sport. And I'm right up there with you and Suzanne on the acquisition of art supplies. I work on the assumption that if I live until they have all run out... As for the colour thing, you're the artist. If you think it needs colour, then it does. Your Nzeppel rainbow most definitely benefits from colour and it cheered me up no end just to look at it.

    1. Thank you for your compliments. I need to learn to have some self restraint with craft materials! (I have failed so far :(). That's why I love rainbows - looking at the happy colours you cant help but smile! Have a great happy weekend!

  3. Needless to say the whole tile is fantastic in its uniqueness, but I actually followed the green Nzeppel lines and noticed, it is done in just one string. Well, if that is not incredibly clever I don't know what is!!!!

  4. I love those fineliners too. I don't really care if they last forever as I don't think I will either, LOL! It is definitely a pretty piece with the rainbow look. Very happy!

    1. Wooo how do you find them fineliners? I bought them loose (due to the offers in store buying them loose was cheaper than a box set) and spent eons trying to choose colours. The problem with me and too many colours is figuring out how to use them!

Thanks for the compliments! I loved the happy rainbow too! I think that even if you thought the work wasnt great, rainbows just make them happier regardless! :)
